Child sexual abuse can affect any family
The horrific case of two babysitters accused of drugging and molesting a five-year-old highlights the danger of child sexual abuse, but parents can take steps to protect their children, according to Alisa Roberts of Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana .
“A child can be sexually abused by anyone, even a relative or trusted friend, so it’s important to talk to your children about their bodies and their right to protect themselves,” said Roberts, the Northwest Regional Director of the non-profit organization.
The reasons people abuse children are complex, and can include emotional problems, substance abuse or a history of abuse in their own childhood.
“Regardless of the reasons, there is no excuse for sexual abuse,” Roberts emphasized.
She suggests that parents teach children about private areas of the body, such as the parts covered in a bathing suit. Let them know that some touch feels good (hugging or holding hands) and that some touch feels bad (hitting, touching private areas).
“Children need to know that no one has the right to touch them in any way that makes them feel uncomfortable,” said Roberts.
Let children know they can speak openly with you, and remain calm should a child tell you about abuse that has already occurred.
Parents can also watch for symptoms of sexual abuse, such as overly seductive or aggressive behavior, depression, injury to the genital area, painful urination, wetting the bed, an inappropriate knowledge of sex or sudden fear of leaving their parents or their home.
If you suspect a child has been abused, or a child tells you about abuse, it is important to report it to your local law enforcement or Office of Community Services. Steps will be taken to protect the child and provide them with necessary treatment.
“Most importantly, the child should know he or she did nothing wrong and is not to blame for what happened.”
“When we hear of these abuse cases, we feel helpless and disheartened, but there is hope. By making more people aware of what child sexual abuse is, we can work together to protect the children in our families and communities. We can all make a difference,” Roberts said.
