Shelters urged to keep children safe
In response to more than one confirmed case of child sexual abuse occurring in hurricane evacuee shelters across the state, Prevent Child Abuse (PCA) Louisiana is urging shelter coordinators to make the safety of the children in their facilities a top priority.
PCA Louisiana suggests that shelters do background checks on all volunteers, and to use volunteers from programs such as Big Buddy and Boys and Girls Club who have already had screenings.
Additionally, PCA Louisiana is working with law enforcement officers and other security professionals who are willing to serve as additional security in the shelters, specifically guarding the children. This kind of effort, with the support of local law enforcement, can be replicated in other cities around the state.
An adapted version of the “Good Touch, Bad Touch” presentation for children is now available to be given at the shelters by PCA Louisiana staff and volunteers. PCA Louisiana staff can also provide training to shelter volunteers on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse and how to report suspected child maltreatment.
If your shelter would like to have these services, please call (225) 925-9520 ext. 213.
