First Steps

First Steps is a hospital-based program targeted to new parents and their infants. Trained volunteers make hospital visits to new parents during that crucial period of time surrounding the birth of their first child. First Steps volunteers:

•Discuss the responsibilities & stresses of parenting

•Offer appropriate coping techniques

•Act as a bridge between the patient and the hospital social services staff

•Refer parents to appropriate community resources and the PCA Louisiana KIDLINE

•Offer follow-up and support assistance
